Kalla expresses willingness to pair with Jokowi in the presidential election

I

ndonesian Red Cross chairman Jusuf Kalla has expressed his willingnessto pair with Governor Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo in the 2014 presidential election.

'€œAs long as our candidacy will do good for the country and the Indonesian people, I am ready to pair with Jokowi,'€ Kalla said on Tuesday as quoted by Tribunnews.com on Wednesday.

According to Kalla, he had recommended that Jokowi run in the Jakarta gubernatorial election in July 2012.

Kalla described Jokowi, who is an Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician, as a man with good leadership character who is able to make decisions which fit the public'€™s aspirations.

'€œMore importantly, some say that Jokowi and I will be a harmonious combination because we respectively represent Java and regions outside of Java,'€ Kalla said referring to Sulawesi, his region of origin.

However, Kalla, who was formerly chairman of the Golkar Party, said that the candidacy decision would depend on PDIP chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri, PDIP'€™s executive board members and the Indonesian people in general.

As previously reported, Kalla, who is known for bringing the government and the Free Aceh Movement to negotiation table in Helsinki in 2005, has rejected an invitation to the Democratic Party'€™s convention. (hrl)
