Myanmar to sign reciprocal visa exemptions

Myanmar's foreign ministry has said the country would be signing reciprocal visa exemptions with ASEAN countries next year.

During a parliamentary session on Monday, Deputy Foreign Minister Tin Oo Lwin said that Myanmar and Laos had signed a reciprocal 14-day visa exemption for ordinary passport holders in 2006. "The government will take the same measures with the remaining ASEAN countries in the next fiscal year," he said.

Myanmar signed an agreement with Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines in June to develop a smart visa system for tourism developments in the region.

Myanmar reaped over US$29 billion from visa fees collected by its embassies, permanent missions and consulates in foreign countries from April 2011 to May 2013.
