The Muarojambi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has opened a command post to handle raging forest fires in the region.
"Other institutions, like the Public Works Agency, Health Agency and Forestry Agency, are also supporting the fire fighting program," Muarojambi BPBD head Zakir said, adding that residents could report any forest fires to the post.
As of Tuesday, according to Forestry and Plantation Agency, five hotspots were found across Muarojambi regency. The hotspots were in Gerunggung village, Sekernan district; an industrial forest owned by PT WKS in Rukam village in Kumpeh district; a protected forest in Manis Mato village; in Puding village; and on land owned by PT Reiki Unit 22 in Sungai Bahar Selatan district.
The fire in Manis Mato village is considered the most alarming as it is on peatland. "The dry season makes conditions worse," said Muarojambi Forestry and Plantation Agency head Budhi Hartono.
