ax authorities at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport detained 15 people, mostly Indonesians, foiling an attempt to bring more than 3.5 kilograms of illegal drugs worth Rp 4.5 billion (US$450,000) into the country.

Head of the customs and excise office at the airport, Purwidi, said in a press conference on Wednesday that the 15 suspects, including two Indians and one Nigerian, were arrested in several raids conducted on Aug. 20 and Sept. 1 and during the raids, the excise and tax authorities confiscated a total of 3.588 grams of crystal methamphetamine.

He said his office seized 1.582 grams of crystal meth inserted in a wooden box that was being sent through a cargo service company from Guangzhou in China. In cooperation with the police, the office arrested seven Indonesians when they came to the cargo service company's office in the city to take the package.

The second major arrest was conducted on Aug. 29 when a custom tactical unit (CTU) arrested an Indonesian woman when she was claiming luggage brought in by an Indonesian flag carrier from Guangzhou. More than 1,000 grams of similar drugs were confiscated from the woman's luggage.

According to data at the airport, the authorities have foiled 69 smuggling attempts, seized more than 77 kilograms of crystal meth, 7 kilograms of ketamine, 289 grams of heroin and 414.585 ecstasy pills worth a total of Rp 255.4 billion. They also arrested 68 people, including 33 Indonesians, 10 Chinese, five Malaysians and four Indians.
