T

he Pekanbaru District Court sentenced Rani Febriana Hayati to a 14-year jail term on Thursday for smuggling 512 grams of shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine) into the country from Malaysia.

Rani, a student at the School of Engineering at Riau Islamic University, was arrested on Feb. 17 after disembarking from Air Asia flight AK 1340 at the Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport. Customs officers found the drugs, worth Rp 768 million (US$67,665), in her luggage.

The panel of judges, presided over by Irwan Efendi, also fined Rani Rp 1 billion or an additional two month's imprisonment.

The sentence was 10 months more lenient than what the prosecutor asked for. Irwan said one of the incriminating factors was that Rani denied that the luggage was hers but belonged to other people.

During the trial, Rani said the luggage belonged to Magdalena and Erik, nationals of an African country, whom she met in Malaysia. They asked her to swap bags and to send their luggage to someone in Jakarta.

Hearing the harsh verdict, Rani screamed hysterically, saying the drugs were not hers and that she had been framed.

Rani's lawyer, E Sangur, was still considering the verdict. "We have seven days to think it over," he said.
