AKARTA: In a bid to boost Jakarta's sports tourism industry, the city administration is eyeing the chance to host a motor-racing grand prix in the city.
Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo said on Monday that he would send representatives to Macau to study the possibilities. 'I will send a number of representatives to Macau. They are departing in October,' he said.
Jokowi believes that an international sporting event could boost the capital's tourism image.
'We will study the technical requirements that have to be fulfilled to host a MotoGP event,' head of the city's tourism agency, Arie Budhiman, said.
Macau hosts the Macau Grand Prix, an annual motor-racing event which is known for being the only street circuit racing event in which both car and motorcycle races are held.
Every year in November hundreds of racing drivers and riders compete in different categories of motor-racing, including single-seaters, touring cars and motorbikes.
