old miner PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PT NNT),through its social responsibility division, will allocate at least Rp 10 billion (US$890,000) by the end of this year to help develop power networks in Aik Kangkung village, Sekongkang district, West Sumbawa.

Aik Kangkung, a village built following a transmigration program to the area in 1996, remains disadvantaged due to the absence of electricity networks.

'We will allocate the money for the procurement and installment of power poles from the center of Sekongkang district to the village, which is around 20 kilometers,' said the company's social responsibility supervisor, Syamsul Bakhri, on Wednesday.

He said state-owned utility company PT PLN Sumbawa was facing difficulties in providing electricity to Aik Kangkung village due to geographical obstacles.

'PLN said it could procure only cable networks worth Rp 10 billion so we decided to help with the development of the electricity poles,' said Syamsul, adding that the installment of the poles was underway with support from local communities.

At least 400 poles are needed to support the electricity networks connecting to Aik Kangkung village from the center of Sekongkang district. (ebf)
