he World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) has proven that the Muslim world is capable of making a major contribution to the wellbeing of the global community, said Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
According to Najib, this could be seen in the record attendance at the ninth edition of the annual event which has so far drawn 2,800 participants from 128 countries, as well as 10 heads of state or government.
'The message we want to emanate from this event is that the Muslim world is not about problems and conflicts, but has a lot to offer. Although the basic themes of WIEF are business, economics, trade and developing personal relationships, the strong attendance shows growing confidence that the Muslim world can contribute positively,' Najib said at a press conference after the launch of the 9th WIEF on Tuesday.
Najib said Malaysia was also ready to cooperate with others to further develop Islamic finance as the country has much to offer in terms of expertise and experience.
'We are delighted that British Prime Minister David Cameron has announced the issuance of the sovereign sukuk worth about £200 million (US$320.8 million), and that he is committed to seeing the establishment of a syariah-compliant index at the London Stock Exchange.
'The key message is that London wants to be one of the hubs for Islamic finance, and Malaysia is ready to work with London to help it develop this sector,' said Najib, who also witnessed on Thursday the signing of seven Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) at the sidelines of WIEF worth in excess of $720 million.
Nanomalaysia Bhd, BaE Systems Plc and ISIS Innovation Ltd signed an MoU valued at $21 million to explore the potential of establishing a technology prototyping and development centre in Malaysia.
UMLand Bhd and Medini Iskandar Malaysia Sdn Bhd signed an MoU worth $12 million related to the purchase of land in the Medini zone in Iskandar Malaysia.
Clixter Mobile, the National Cooperative Organisation of Malaysia, and Hi-P International signed an MoU worth $315 million to develop, manufacture and market Android smartphones with Islamic content and applications.
KFM Holdings Sdn Bhd and Turkish firm YDA Insaat Sanayu Ve Ticaret A.S. signed an MoU for three public-private healthcare partnerships in Turkey with a value of $250 million.
An MoU to launch the Allianze University College of Medical Sciences Trent Park campus in London and to exchange related agreements betÂween ACS Trent Park Sdn Bhd and Exim Bank Malaysia worth $96 million was also signed.
Felda Global Ventures Bhd and Cambridge Nanosystems signed an MoU worth $26 million to produce carbon nanotubes and graphene using crude palm oil and palm oil waste.
The Global Coalition for Efficient Logistics and the Islamic Centre for the Development of Trade inked an MoU to solidify the participation by member countries of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference to develop digital economies.
