Apindo to employ workers with bachelor degree only

T

he Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) Bekasi regency, West Java, plans to employ workers with a minimum qualification of bachelor (S1) degree only.

'€œWorkers demand for a 50 percent increase in minimum wage and this will make their salary equal to workers with a bachelor degree. Therefore, Apindo plans to employ workers with a bachelor degree only in 2014,'€ said head of Bekasi regency-chapter Apindo, Sutomo, in Cikarang on Sunday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said Apindo was also considering a plan to replace people with machines in the production processes if the minimum wage could not keep up with the production costs.

'€œBusinesspeople will use automated systems by increasing the amount of work done on a machine and reducing workers,'€ said Sutomo.

The plan will be soon implemented if workers continue to demand a minimum wage increase in an amount that is not proper.

Sutomo said workers had a right to demand a wage increase but this should be based on a mechanism along with existing regulations.

'€œIf we pay salary based on their demand and at the same time the production costs continue to increase then definitely, but the demand and same level production will lead to bankruptcy due to unbalanced spending and revenue,'€ said Sutomo.

He said it was worrying that the workers protest on wage hike, which occurred almost every year, would force investors to close down their businesses here.

'€œSuch a condition will directly lead to a high unemployment rate in Indonesia, particularly in Bekasi,'€ said Sutomo. (ebf)
