he police have arrested three Indonesian Navy personnel for allegedly assisting 106 migrants from Myanmar pass through Indonesian territory to get to Australia.
The arrests were conducted on Sunday after police stopped a tourist bus and a mini bus on the road. The 106 migrants were allegedly on their way to a boat that would take them straight to Australia through the southern coast of Garut regency, West Java.
"The three personnel have been charged for allegedly aiding people smuggling," chief of local military command Lt. Col. Suparno said in Garut on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency. Suparno did not reveal details on the identities of the three arrested marines.
Meanwhile, the 106 migrants, who claimed to be displaced Rohingya people from Myanmar, have been detained at a police station in Cibalong district for questioning before being transferred to the immigration office in Tasikmalaya.
