t least 498 police officers were deployed to safeguard a rally at the Australian Embassy in Kuningan, South Jakarta on Friday following wiretapping allegations.

"We will raise the number of personnel if needed. Let's keep an eye on the situation," Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto told Tribunnews.com.

According to their schedule, a number of protests would be held at the embassy compound. The first one by about 250 members of the Laskar Merah Putih paramilitary from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The second was by 500 members of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) at 1 p.m. and the third by 300 members of the Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) at 1:30 p.m.

On Thursday, the Jakarta Police had also deployed officers and two Barracuda armored vehicles to the Australian Embassy, as hundreds of Laskar Merah Putih paramilitary members swarmed the facility, demanding an apology from Abbott.

The protesters burned paper replicas of Australian and US flags while chanting the national anthem.

Indonesia and Australia are in a diplomatic row following reports by Australian media on Monday, regaring a 2009 '€œtop secret'€ document suggesting that Australian intelligence tapped the cellular phones of the President, First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Vice President Boediono and some Cabinet members.
