Hundreds ticketed for busway trespassing

T

he city police have ticketed 522 motorists fortrespassing Transjakarta busway lanes during the first two days of maximumfines being imposed for traffic infringements.

The offenders have to show appear in court on Friday and will have to pay a fine of Rp 500,000 (US$43.60) for motorcyclists and Rp 1 million for car drivers.

The fines for citations commonly range between Rp 60,000 to Rp 200,000.

City police traffic law enforcement division head Sr. Comr. Adj. Hindarsono said on Tuesday that he could not yet determine whether the enactment of the maximum fines were effective in decreasing the number of trespassers.

Hindarsono informed that 254 motorists violated the dedicated busway lanes on Monday, the first day of the maximum fine enactment.

On Tuesday, the number of offenders caught was 268. '€œThe police found more infringements on the second day because more personnel, nearly 300 personnel, were deployed to monitor the bus lanes,'€ he argued.

The maximum fines were imposed in a bid to stop motorists trespassing into the busway lanes and slowing down Transjakarta services, as well as attract motorists to shift to public transportation.

Dewi Anita, 28, who usually trespassed into the bus lanes during peak hours to escape traffic jams, said that she would not do it again after the enactment of the maximum fine. '€œI used the bus lanes against my own will because I was just being herded by other motorcyclists,'€ said an employee of a company in Jl. Jend. Sudirman, Central Jakarta. '€œI do not want to pay a huge fine,'€ she said.
