Heavy rains cause landslides in Karo, nine dead

N

ine people were reportedly killed as landslides caused by heavy rains hit Brastagi district, Karo regency, North Sumatra, on Saturday evening.

The Karo administration said the nine victims had been discovered in three separate locations '€“ Jl.Kolam, Jl. Udara and Brastagi lower district area '€“ on Sunday morning.

Karo administration spokesperson Jhonson Tarigan said getting the victims evacuated had been very challenging due to the hard-to-reach nature of the areas and incessant rainfall in Brastagi.

He said the bodies of all the victims had been taken to a hospital in Brastagi and then handed over to their families.

The disaster has added to the misery of Karo residents heavily affected by the Mount Sinabung volcanic eruptions.

Jhonson said the victims were Brastagi residents whose houses were buried by the landslides. The houses were located on the side of the hill whose declivity reached 45 degrees.

Karo Police chief Adj.Sr.Comr.Albert Sianipar said there were two landslides. The first incident took place in Jl.Udara, Gundaling II sub-district, Brastagi, at around 8 p.m. local time on Saturday.

'€œIn this location, seven people from one family were killed by the landslide," said Albert. The second landslide in Jl.Kolam occurred one and a half hours after the first incident.

Albert said the police were examining the incident. (ebf)
