T

he Mataram administration urged residents to address their opinions of people living with HIV/AIDS (ODHA). It also guaranteed HIV/AIDS patients in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), access to health services in public health facilities.

'€œThe Mataram administration is ready to guarantee adequate access to health care services for people with HIV/AIDS,'€ said Mataram regional secretary, Lalu Makmur said at the province'€™s 2013 World AIDS Day event in Mataram, on Saturday.

HIV drug treatment will be provided in community health centers and public hospitals for free of charge.

Makmur said a harmonious partnership involving the government, community organizations, private companies and civil society was the key to prevention and control.

Organizing committee head Dian Nita Rahmi said the celebrations would give momentum to the addressing of the stigma and discrimination ODHA faced and would create awareness of check-ups at voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) centers in Mataram.

'€œThe number of reported HIV/AIDS cases is just the tip of the iceberg,'€ said Dian.

The NTB-chapter National AIDS Commission (KPA) recorded that as of September, there were 822 HIV/AIDS cases in the province, 12 of which were children under five years old and 163 were housewives.

Of the total, 300 cases were in Mataram, comprising 151 HIV infections and 149 AIDS-positive. (ebf)
