ustoms and Excise officers atSoekarno-Hatta International Airportseized 8.2 kilograms crystal methamphetamine worth Rp 10.5 billion from Nov. 15to 24.
'We arrested eight suspects comprising four foreigners and four Indonesians in six smuggling cases,' Okto Irianto, head of the airport customs office, said on Thursday.
The suspects were a 31-year-old Chinese woman, a 49-year-old German man, a Nigerian man, a 25-year-old Thai woman, three Indonesian men and an Indonesian woman.
Sr. Comr. Soemirat Dwiyanto of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) said that all of the suspects were the members of international drug syndicates who used mules to smuggle drugs.
'They usually hire Europeans to smuggle drugs and Middle East airlines,' he said.
According to the Customs and Excise Office, 89 drug smuggling attempts had been foiled since January and 47 foreigners and 57 Indonesian declared suspects. The drugs were worth a combined Rp 317 billion and comprised 114.73 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 12.4 kg of ketamine, 1.09 kg of heroin, 774 grams of cocaine, 414,441 ecstasy pills, 4.094 kg of methylone and 114 grams of amphetamine.(dic)
