Freight train derails in Central Java

A

freight train derailed at the 174 kilometer point locatedbetween Tanjung and Bulakamba stations in Kluwut village, Bulakamba, Brebesregency, on Wednesday at around 9:05 a.m.

Spokesman from state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Operational Region (Daop) III Zunerfin said the train had consisted of 20 cars. The train was heading to Surabaya in East Java from Jakarta.

The train'€™s first three cars derailed in the incident. Zunerfin said the incident was caused by a broken railway measuring 1.5 meters. No casualties, however, were reported in the incident.

'€œWe had to re-route the train to Prupuk due to the incident. The route change also resulted in a one-hour delay [from Tanjung to Bulakamba stations],'€ said Zunerfin, adding that some portions of the railroads in the area were undergoing repairs.

PT KAI has called on train drivers to slow down while passing through the route.

According to some workers in the area, the driver of the derailed freight train failed to slow down even though signs had reminded him to do so.
