As many as 2,790 Indonesians were deported by the Malaysian government via Nunukan regency, North Kalimantan, throughout 2013.
The head of the immigration unit of Tunon Taka International Port in Nunukan, Nasution, said on Thursday that Indonesian citizens who worked in Sabah, Malaysia, were mostly deported due to improper immigration documents.
'Most of the Indonesian workers were deported because they did not have proper immigration documents or had expired passports. The others were deported because of alleged involvement in criminal cases linked to drugs and robberies,' said Nasution as quoted by Antara news agency.
'Most of the Indonesian workers deported were from South Sulawesi while workers from Timor, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), ranked the second,' he went on.
According to official data from Nunukan immigration office, the number of deported Indonesian workers hailing from South Sulawesi reached 1,963, followed by 514 from NTT, 121 from Central Sulawesi, 86 from areas in Java, 30 from West Nusa Tenggara and 16 from East Kalimantan.
The remaining 60 workers were from Maluku, North Sulawesi, South Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi, West Kalimantan and areas in Sumatra.
The data also showed that 2,299 out of the total were male workers and 491 female. (ebf)
