ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has requested that 10 of its flight schedules be transferred from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang regency to Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport in East Jakarta.
"Garuda has proposed to the Transportation Ministry that 10 flight schedules be operated from Halim. We have yet to get approval from the ministry," Garuda spokesman Pujobroto said as quoted by Antara on Wednesday.
Pujobroto explained that the flight transfer to Halim Airport aimed to reduce the traffic burden at Soekarno-Hatta airport, where Garuda operates 520 flight schedules.
Garuda will also maintain its services at Halim airport similar to those at Soekarno-Hatta airport, so as to satisfy its passengers.
"We will need to establish facilities such as an executive lounge, parking area and proper check-in counters," Pujobroto pointed out.
He added that Garuda would need at least 30 days to build the facilities, once the ministry gave its approval.
Garuda, he said, was still selecting the flight routes that would be transferred to Halim airport.
Pujobroto further said that the routes transferred to Halim would be those with the highest frequency, such as Surabaya-Jakarta that has 18 flights a day.
Halim airport is set to operate as a commercial airport, serving at least 66 domestic flights per day.
"The airport currently serves only private lines for domestic and overseas flights," Iwan Khrishadianto, general manager of state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II at Halim airport, said.
