onsidering that many streets in Yogyakarta are not deemed safe for cyclists as they do not have designated bicycle lanes, activists from a number of bicycle communities in the city have demanded 'friendlier' spaces on the streets for them.
The demand emerged during a rally held on Friday evening at the Tugu Jogja monument to commemorate the death of 8-year-old Nova Arif Safaat, who recently died after being hit by a tourist bus while riding a bicycle on Jl. Monjali.
'We want streets that are friendly for bikers,' one of the activists, Anisa Rahmawati, said on Saturday.
After conducting the rally in the monument area, the protesters walked to Kewek Bridge to install an art installation entitled Ghost Bike. The installation was made out of a small bicycle whose whole body was painted white.
Yogyakarta has become renowned for its cyclist communities over the last few years. However, of all the streets in the city, only Jl. Mangkubumi and Jl. Malioboro are considered safe for cyclists as they both have designated bicycle lanes.
