ajor flooding paralyzes northern coastal highway lane in Kudus, Central Java, on Wednesday when the road around the T-junction near Jati Kudus terminal was inundated in 1 meter-high floodwater.
The water level in the area rose significantly from the previous day, making the road impassable.
The floodwaters resulted in long lines of vehicles along the busy road leading to Surabaya. There was a similar situation along the route from Kudus to Demak.
Tono, 38, a truck driver, said he had sit stationary around the flooded junction from 6 a.m. "I can't move at all. The queue of vehicles from Semarang is still very long," he said on Wednesday afternoon as quoted by the Antara news agency.
Rasijo, 43, another driver, claimed that he had been trapped in the traffic jam from Tuesday on his way to Semarang.
Kudus Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Bambang Murdoko said he had deployed personnel to help direct the traffic. 'We decided to reroute the traffic by ordering motorists heading from Surabaya to Semarang to use other routes, including the one heading to Purwodadi,' he said.
However, the alternative routes were only suitable for medium-sized vehicles, he added. (krb)
