Four people died instantly and one sustained severe injuries in a tragic train incident in Yogyakarta on Thursday.

According to witnesses, the five were crossing a rail track and appeared to unaware a train was approaching.

The victims were hit by the Senja Utama train serving the Jakarta-Surakarta route.

Gate officer Setiyanto insisted he had closed the gate a minute after he received the signal that the train was approaching.

'€œThis is actually an automatic gate but then it opened suddenly by itself,'€ he said.

The survivor was identified as Ahmad Wido Pratomo, a student at State Senior High School 1 Gamping, Sleman. He was rushed to the nearest hospital minutes after the collision.

Ahmad was riding a motorcycle along with a passenger at the time of the accident. The passenger died on the scene.

The dead victims were identified as Sumardi, Suparwanto, Putri Latifah and Gitri Yuda Widodo.

No explanation was available from state-owned train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) regarding the incident.
