ormer trade minister Gita Wirjawan, who recesntly stepped down from his post to take part in the Democratic Party presidential convention, has said that he is ready to be questioned by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) concerning the alleged illegal influx of rice from Vietnam.

'€œI'€™m ready [to be questioned by the BPK],'€ said Gita in Bandung on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said the issue of imported Vietnamese rice was politically motivated. '€œThere are many aspects in the rice importation case that are political, one of which was connected to my resignation as a trade minister,'€ said Gita.

He hoped the questioning might disclose those responsible. '€œIt will be revealed who has politicized the issue,'€ said Gita.

He said he had checked the imported rice at a laboratory and found it was medium-type Vietnamese rice that had been imported and not the higher quality premium type.

Earlier, BPK member Ali Masykur Musa said the agency would investigate the alleged illegal importation of 16,000 tons of rice from Vietnam even though Gita Wirjawan was no longer trade minister. (ebf)
