Issue of the day: Woman falls off Casablanca overpass

J

strong>Jan. 29, p9

An accident involving a motorcycle and a car on the Casablanca overpass in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, late on Monday, resulted in the death of a woman, who fell off the 18-meter elevated road.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Tuesday that the motorcyclist, M. Faisal Bustamin, took the highway toward Tebet, South Jakarta, but turned around halfway along the one-way street.

'€œHe thought the police were citing motorcyclists who were illegally using the overpass and turned around to avoid the operation,'€ Rikwanto said, adding that no operation was taking place that night.

Your comments:

This is not only due to indiscipline by the motorcyclist, but also due to the police'€™s stupid trick.

Why should they place themselves at the end of the overpass?

Is it just to get some financial handouts from motorcyclists who shouldn'€™t be using the overpass?

If they want to promote safety, it would be better if they patrolled the entry to the overpass, to prevent motorcyclists from entering. I think it is a bad decision to try and catch '€œnaughty'€ motorcyclists at the end of the overpass, which risks causing road accidents.

This shows how corrupt the police are.

If motorcyclists are not allowed to use the overpass, why don'€™t the police stop them before they can get on the road rather than trying to catch them when they'€™re already on it?

There is no other reason than to get easy money from the riders.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the Tanah Abang-Kampung Melayu overpass and it was published in The Jakarta Post.

Now we can see the result: A pregnant woman has died, which should serve as an example to all motorcyclists.

Even after this accident, other riders didn'€™t learn anything; they kept on riding their bikes on the overpass like idiots.

The police have only been blocking one side of the overpass, which has certainly cost a lot of motorcyclists a lot of money in fines.

But the police are there to catch people who break the law, not babysit them.

I think motorcyclists using the overpass should be given even tougher punishments.

There should be more random checks on licenses. Obviously, the guy involved in this accident shouldn'€™t have been riding in the first place.

In the event, he killed his wife and unborn child. Bikers: Please learn from other people'€™s mistakes and don'€™t be too cocky.

A lack of discipline seems to be programmed into some people.

Often parents teach their kids by setting the wrong example, so they see nothing wrong in driving a bike with no lights the wrong way on a toll road.

They think it'€™s only a problem if the police see them.

What is required is more police officers on the roads to control the traffic, which I hope the government will consider. This would also help to reduce unemployment.

These motorcyclists ride on the sidewalks, run red lights and go the wrong way down a one-way street and, despite their being in the wrong, what I hate is that they don'€™t see it.

One motorcyclist even yelled at me while I was trying to cross an intersection while the lights were red!

I can tolerate mistakes but I can'€™t tolerate stupidity. This city is turning into a serious joke.

Having lived for so many years in Jakarta, nothing surprises me anymore; especially if money (fines) is involved.

Like it or not, a motorcycle is still the cheapest and fastest way to get around Jakarta.

The best thing to do is to promote safety, rules and ethics to all road users, especially stubborn motorcyclists.

This group of people is not only breaking traffic rules but putting other vehicles in harm'€™s way. There should be stricter laws to apprehend these road rowdies and bar them from the streets forever.

These bikers who drive against the traffic are criminals and the police should treat these people accordingly. In most accidents, the victims are seldom talked about.
