he number of known drug abusers in Jambi province hasreached 50,420 people this year, excluding those serving jail time, mentallyill patients and people living with HIV/AIDS, the province'€™s National DrugAgency chief, Sr. Comr. M. Yamin, said on Thursday.

'€œThe province ranked sixth at the national level in 2012, decreasing to 12 last year. But the number of drug abusers is still high, including at government institutions,'€ Yamin told reporters.

Yamin revealed that 18,615 people died a year, or 51 a day, of drug abuse in Jambi.

He said the number of people living with HIV/AIDS contracted through intravenous drug use reached 1,050 while 100 to 300 people were mentally ill due to drug abuse.
