he committee for the Democratic Party's (PD)presidential convention said it cannot afford to broadcast a series of debatesthat it held to demonstrate the competence of the party's presidentialhopefuls.
'To broadcast on national television is really expensive. We cannot afford it. We do want to be able to broadcast it. But we don't have the money,' committee chairman Maftuh Basyuni said as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that the committee would try its best to publicize the mission and vision of each convention participant. Previously, one of the contenders in the convention, Paramadina University rector Anies Baswedan, protested that the committee has never aired the convention debates, although it is mandated to do so by the party's supreme council.
He argued that the public would not be able to tell which candidate was the best if the debates were not aired on TV.
