Indonesiaâs International Boxing Organization (IBO) world featherweight champion Daud Yordan has turned to motivational coach Urgyen Rinchen Sim to help him get ready for his next fight
ndonesia's International Boxing Organization (IBO) world featherweight champion Daud Yordan has turned to motivational coach Urgyen Rinchen Sim to help him get ready for his next fight.
The boxer's brother and coach, Damianus Yordan, said that Sim had been working with them for quite some time.
'While we are in charge of preparing him [Daud] physically and all the general preparation for his next fight, Sim is in charge of preparing him mentally,' he told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
'He teaches Daud how to overcome defeat and get back up. Winning and losing is a common thing for athletes but sometimes they get shaken up by defeat and need help to rebuild and improve their mentality,' he said.
Earlier, Sim told a number of reporters that he had started coaching Daud right after the boxer lost to South African Simpiwe Vetyeka in Jakarta in April 2013.
'Fortunately, Daud is a fighter in real life. Despite the disappointing loss in his IBO world featherweight title at that time, he did not suffer from depression,' he said.
'Basically, people only need someone to talk to help sort out their problems, and that's what I do professionally,' said the 39-year-old businessman cum motivational coach.
Daud reclaimed his IBO world featherweight title by defeating Sipho Taliwe of South Africa in Perth, Australia, last December. He had a fight scheduled for March in China, but the promoter decided to move the venue to Australia, while the name of his opponent will be announced at a later date.
Born in Palembang, South Sumatra to a Chinese father and Nepalese mother, Sim, who is a childhood friend of Raja Sapta Oktohari, owner of Mahkota Promotion ' an event organizer that frequently holds boxing contests in Asia and Australia ' was introduced to Daud around seven years ago.
'We've been friends ever since. That's why when I was asked to coach Daud, we didn't have any communication issues even though we seldom interact face-to-face,' said Sim.
Even though motivational coach is relatively unknown in Indonesia, according to Sim, it is important not only for athletes but those in other professions to be mentally fit as well.
Asked about the difference between a motivational speaker and motivational coach, Sim referenced track and field.
'A motivational speaker is like a sprint event. They [only] encourage you to have a goal, while a motivational coach is like a combination of a middle-distance running event and a marathon, assisting you to reach your goal,' he said.
