Water levels in Bogor have risen due to heavy rain since Saturday morning, raising the possibility of flash flooding downstream in the Ciliwung River in Jakarta.
At the Katulampa water gate in Bogor, the Ciliwung's level had risen to 110 centimeters, enough to raise it to alert III status. Katulampa sluice gate attendant Andi Sudirman said that the rise in the Ciliwung was due to heavy rains hitting the Puncak region in the regency of Bogor.
'Heavy rains started from 03.00 a.m. and continued until daybreak in Puncak,' he told tribunnews.com.
Andi said that the water level in Ciliwung had been normal before Saturday. 'It has been normal for a week, which is between 30-40 centimeters,' said Andi.
As of midday Saturday, said Andi, rain was still hammering the Puncak region. It is estimated that the water level would continue to rise because the flow of water from the Ciesek River had not entered the Ciliwung.
Not only is the Puncak region hit by heavy rain; Bogor city and parts of Cibinong are also drenched. 'It has been raining heavily since dawn,' complained Yuliani, a Bogor resident. Right now, many areas in the capital are reported of being inundated by flood. (tsj/dic)
