t least 38 ministers and 400 delegates from Asia Pacific, ASEAN and South Asia are currently attending a three-day international forum on reduce, reuse, recycle waste management in Surabaya, East Java, which will end on Thursday.

Ifron Hadi Susanto, head of external affairs with the Surabaya administration, said Surabaya was chosen as the host city for the forum, given its experience in handling urban waste issues.

'€œThe environmental development in Surabaya is heading in the right direction under the leadership of Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini,'€ Ifron said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com. Rismaharini is one of the speakers at the forum.

The forum, which will discuss a series of issues concerning the environment, climate change and urban waste management, is being held in conjunction with Waste Care Day 2014.

The forum also allows delegates to visit several waste treatment centers managed by the city's residents in Jambangan, Kertajaya and Gundih subdistricts.

On Monday, a waste management declaration was announced in Surabaya by 22 regional leaders from across Indonesia, entrepreneurs and representatives from NGOs, the Environment Ministry and the Public Works Ministry. (yln/hhr)
