he government and the Papua Elections Commission (KPUD) have failed to provide an additional budget for the second round of the Mimika regent election, which will cause further postponements to an already delayed election, says an official.
The second round should have been held on Jan. 23.
KPUD member Musa Sombuk said the absence of a budget would create uncertainty and likely delay the election even further, perhaps until after the legislative election on April 9.
'The reason given for not having a budget is ridiculous and unacceptable,' he said on Tuesday.
Two candidate pairs qualified for the second round of the election - Abdul Muis-Hans Magal and Eltinus Omaleng-Yohanis Bassang.
This is the second delay of the second round of the election. Previously, Papua Governor Lukas Enembe said the Mimika Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) had denied the additional budget proposed by Mimika acting regent Ausilius You.
'According to lawmakers, the additional budget should be proposed by different official,' he said.
The dispute is being handled by the Home Ministry. (dic)
