Ministry needs more researchers with PhDs

T

he Education and Culture Ministry has encouraged thecountry'€™s researchers to get doctoral degrees as part of its efforts to improvethe quality of higher education.

'€œWe need to increase research in all sectors so that we can improve our education system and the quality of our human resources. We are willing to work together with anyone to achieve this goal [...],'€ the Education and Culture Minister, Muhammad Nuh, said at a Global Education Dialogue conference in Central Jakarta, on Monday.

The conference, organized by the British Council, aimed to promote collaboration between universities and research institutions in the UK, Australia and Indonesia.

Deputy Education and Culture Minister Musliar Kasim said that despite having more than 3,500 higher education institutions and 5.2 million students in Indonesia, one of the biggest obstacles in the education sector is the lack of Indonesians holding PhDs, which inhibits the country'€™s capacity to carry out comprehensive research studies, he said.

'€œWe are currently providing scholarships for students who would like to get their masters or doctoral degrees at overseas universities,'€ Musliar said, adding that only around 1,000 Indonesians are currently studying in the UK for either of those degrees.

Musliar said that currently the government wanted universities to focus research on the agricultural, energy and health sectors.
