Death sought for Bandung manager murder case Wawan: (JP/Arya Dipa) (JP/Arya Dipa)

Prosecutors at the Bandung District Court on Thursday demanded that a defendant be handed the death sentence for allegedly robbing and killing a company manager.

Prosecutors also asked the court to hand down a life sentence to a second defendant, who allegedly assisted in the murder of Fransisca Yofie, the brand manager of PT Venera Multi Finance.

The two defendants were Wawan, also known as Awing, and his accomplice Ade Ismayadi.

'€œThe prosecutors believe the defendants caused severe wounds that resulted in the death of the victim,'€ said Rinaldi Umar, chairman of the prosecuting team.

The alleged murder occurred on Aug. 5, 2013, when Wawan asked his friend Ade to join him to search for a bag-snatching target. Before committing the crime, Wawan allegedly prepared a cleaver and also drank beer with Ade, who was tasked with carrying Wawan on the back of a motorbike.

While searching for a target, according to prosecutors, Wawan told Ade to pull over in front of a house on Jl. Setra Indah Utara II after spotting a parked car with an open door. Wawan alighted from the motorbike and grabbed a bag from the car.

Fransisca, the owner of both the car and the bag, was opening the gate of the house. She then chased Wawan, who was already back on the motorbike, and grabbed him from behind.

'€œThe defendant [Wawan] slashed the victim three times, which resulted in three wounds to her head,'€ said Lia Pratiwi, a member of the prosecuting team.

Despite this, Fransisca kept her grip on Wawan'€™s T-shirt, before falling to the ground. Her hair then became entangled in the wheel of the motorbike.

'€œ[Despite seeing this] Wawan [...] told Ade to accelerate. After dragging [the victim] for 200 meters, Wawan alighted from the motorbike again and cut off the victim'€™s hair. They left the severely wounded victim on the street,'€ Lia said.

The evidence presented was collated from the examinations of 29 witnesses and the results of a visum et repertum (legal medical report).

According to Rinaldi, there were a number of aggravating factors in the defendants'€™ case, including the fact that the crime was committed during the fasting month of Ramadhan and that it caused fear in the community.

'€œAlso, the crime was not committed because of economic reasons, as the defendants had a business [from which] to earn a living,'€ said Rinaldi, adding that the crime was committed under the influence of alcohol.

'€œWawan had also been arrested for bag snatching before. He should have learnt a lesson from that,'€ said Rinaldi, stating that there were no mitigating factors in the defendants'€™ case.

The trial was adjourned until March 17 to hear the defendants'€™ defense statements.
