Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said the police had arrested two suspects identified as Ahmad Imam Al Hafitd, 19, and his girlfriend Assyifa, 19. Rikwanto said that according to preliminary questioning, the police found out that the two suspects had masterminded the murder out of jealousy. Ahmad was Sara's ex-boyfriend and was reportedly upset that Sara no longer wanted to speak with him while Assyifa was scared Ahmad would find a way to be with Sara again.
The couple was accused of violating Criminal Code and thus could face at least 20 years in prison or even death sentence if proven guilty.
Commenting on the murder, Sara's mother, Elisabeth Diana, said that despite the murder accusation, she still believed that deep down, both Hafitd and Assyifa were good people.
'It will be up to the police from now on, but I do believe that after they serve time in prison, they will realize the severity of their actions and become good people all over again,' Elisabeth said on Friday on the sidelines of her daughter's funeral at Pondok Kelapa cemetery in East Jakarta, Kompas.com reported.
Sara was the only daughter of Elisabeth and her husband, Suroto. This family resides in Rawamangun, East Jakarta. Sara was allegedly picked up by Hafitd and Assyifa on her way to Goethe Institute, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon. She was then allegedly tortured, electrified and stranggled to death and then dumped on the side of the toll road.(dic)
