Mazda expects 8.5 percent increase in sales this year

P

T Mazda Motor Indonesia, a subsidiary of Japan'€™s Mazda Motor Corporation, expects sales to increase this year after a slight drop in 2013.

Mazda Motor Indonesia'€™s senior marketing manager, Astrid Ariani Wijana, said sales in the Indonesian car market were projected to reach 12,000, up 8.5 percent from the previous year. Mazda sold 11,051 cars last year, down around 9 percent from the sales figure recorded in 2012.

'€œWe are confident we can sell 12,000 cars this year,'€ Astrid said during the official opening of the company'€™s first part distribution center (PDC) in Cakung Cilincing, North Jakarta, on Wednesday.

The company had secured 0.9 percent of market share by the end of 2013, said Astrid, adding that its market share would stay at around 0.9 percent this year. '€œMarket conditions this year are a bit uncertain, particularly due to the elections, so we predict that our market share will remain the same,'€ she said.

Total car sales in the country reached 1.22 million in 2013, 10 percent higher than the 1.11 million cars sold in 2012, according to the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo). Gaikindo estimates total sales will remain the same this year, but Frost and Sulivan projects total sales in 2014 will increase by 6.5 percent.

Mazda was upbeat that it could reach its sales target of 12,000 cars this year from its 10 models, Astrid said, adding that the Mazda2, Mazda CX-5, and Mazda Biante were its three best sellers in Indonesia.

The Mazda CX-5 and Mazda Biante made up 19.9 percent and 10.6 percent, respectively, of total sales last year. The top contributor was the Mazda2, on 42.6 percent.

'€œOur cars'€™ main selling points are their design and technology,'€ she said, adding that Mazda would continue to renew its car designs and upgrade its engines, the latest of which utilizes sky active technology.

Mazda launched three new models last year: the New Mazda MX-5, the New Mazda CX-9 and the All New Mazda 6.

Meanwhile, Mazda'€™s new PDC aimed to improve service as well as increase the availability of spare parts for Mazda customers, the company'€™s parts and accessories manager, Iwan Majjalekka, told reporters. '€œThe opening of the distribution center is one of our strategies to increase car sales this year'€ he said. (alz)
