he Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) says that campaigning will not disrupt presidential candidate Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's duties as the Jakarta governor.
'Campaign activities will not be disturbing Jokowi's duties as a governor as he will campaign only on Saturday and Sunday,' said PDI-P deputy secretary general Hasto Kristiyanto in Jakarta on Sunday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said the PDI-P had never asked Jokowi to campaign for the party on weekdays as this would disturb his work as Jakarta governor.
'So for everyone who might think that campaign activities will disturb his duties as a governor, it's not true at all,' said Hasto.
Jokowi opened his campaign on Sunday by visiting several historical landmarks in Jakarta, such as the National Awakening Museum, the Youth Pledge Museum and the Investigative Committee for the Preparation of the Independence of Indonesia (BPUPKI) building.
PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri endorsed Jokowi as the party's presidential candidate on Friday. (ebf)
