efense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro has asserted that the military radar placed in Sabang, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam -- Indonesia's westernmost point -- did not detect missing flight MH370 or any other foreign aircraft crossing Indonesian airspace.
'I have received a report about it. The air defense radar system in Sabang is very sophisticated and it did not detect any aircraft,' he said in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
The minister said the military radar owned by the Defense Ministry was more sensitive than civilian radars so that there was no reason to doubt its accuracy.
He went on to say that Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein had contacted him on Wednesday morning. The Malaysian minister, he added, asked Indonesia to help find the missing Malaysia Airlines flight, which disappeared on March 8.
'The Malaysian minister phoned me this morning asking for help from Indonesia because the deadline for the black box search operation would fall within the next 20 days,' Purnomo said. He said Indonesia was committed to helping Malaysia find the plane. (ebf)
