Gerindra to announce vice presidential candidate after legislative election

T

he Gerindra Party will announce the running mate of its presidential candidate, Prabowo Subianto, after the legislative election, which is set to take place on April 9, a party official has said.

'€œWe will wait until after April 9 to announce our candidate because we want to see the results of the election first,'€ said Gerindra chairman Suhardi on Sunday.

He was speaking on the sidelines of a campaign rally at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Suhardi said that based on the election results, the party would then review its strategy and decide who would be Prabowo's best running mate, whether that be someone from within the party or outside through the forming of a coalition.

'€œIf we announce our candidate now,it might affect our votes and we might risk not reaching the presidential threshold. We would then be forced to form a coalition,a situation that might see us lose out on a presidential nominee,'€ said Suhardi.

Law No.42/2008 on the presidential election stipulates that only a political party or a coalition that garners 20 percent of legislative seats or 25 percent of the popular vote in the April 2014 legislative election is eligible to contest the presidential election.

Gerindra secretary-general Ahmad Muzani said his party was assessing five names that could Prabowo'€™s running mates and that they were all civilians.

He further said that Prabowo was communicating intensively with leaders of other parties. (ebf)
