Timika aircraft terminal set to operate by end of the year

Mimika regency administration in Papua plans to begin operating a new aircraft terminal at Timika Airport by the end of 2014.

Construction of the terminal has been underway since 2012, head of the regency'€™s air transport office, John Rettob, said in the regional capital of Timika on Monday.

The terminal will be equipped with facilities such as a commercial passenger terminal, John told Antara news agency.

"This year we will finish the construction of the aircraft terminal, so that it can be set to operate by the end of this year," he said.

The airport currently has no commercial passenger terminal, so incoming and outgoing passengers have to use the terminal owned by copper- and gold-mining company PT Freeport Indonesia.

Construction of the new passenger terminal will start this year, John said.

The central government, through the Transportation Ministry, has pledged support for the construction of the project.

The Transportation Ministry, the Mimika regency administration and PT Freeport Indonesia recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding support for the project. (***)
