T

heAgriculture Ministry says Indonesia will not import rice throughout 2014as it predicts the country will see a surplus of 8 million tons of rice by theend of this year.

"Itis because of wet and dry conditions [which benefit the production ofrice] and make more farmers plant paddy," Deputy Agriculture Minister Rusman Heriawan said in Jakarta on Friday asquoted by kontan.co.id.

Previouslyat the beginning of March, the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) said thedomestic rice supply was enough for the next six months.

Atthat time, Bulog head Sutarto Alimoese said the agency had a supply of1.7 million tons of rice.

"Wedon'€™t see that we will need to import rice at this moment. We'€™re goingto have more supply from the domestic market," he said.

Similar to Rusman, he said weather conditions would help the country produce more rice.
