Fewer people than expected cast votes in Hong Kong

A

n official with the Elections Monitoring Agency(Bawaslu) said he regretted the low number of Indonesians in Hong Kong who had cast their votes for the legislative election. According to Bawaslu, only 10 percent of 102,000 Indonesians living in Hong Kong had cast their votes.

'€œThis is a very low figure,'€ Bawaslu commissioner Nelson Simanjuntak said in Jakarta on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

He added that only around 5,000 Indonesians had cast their votes at polling stations, while another 16,000 had posted their votes through the mail.

'€œMany of the registered voters hadn't received the invitation to vote, while some others received invitations but didn't know what they were for,'€ he said.

He said Bawaslu had also discovered that Indonesians who were currently serving prison terms in Hong Kong had not been afforded the chance to cast their votes either. He said it seemed as though the local authority prohibited the Indonesian inmates from casting their votes.

No information was made available as to how many Indonesians are behind bars in Hong Kong available.(idb/dic)
