Greek PM's top aide quits over Golden Dawn remarks

A

top aide to Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has resigned over a video in which he appears to accuse Samaras of influencing a criminal investigation into a Nazi-inspired party to gain votes.

Panayiotis Baltakos issued an apology in which he claimed his comments were only intended to "relieve pressure" from Golden Dawn party officials he said accused him of conspiring against them.

The ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn ranks fourth in Greek popularity surveys. Its leader and another two of its lawmakers have been jailed pending trial for allegedly running a criminal organization.

The party posted the undated video of Baltakos' private conversation with a senior Golden Dawn lawmaker during a Parliamentary debate Wednesday, in which lawmakers voted to allow the criminal prosecution of another five party lawmakers.
