NGOs name problematic legislative candidates in Yogyakarta

A

coalition of NGOs in Yogyakarta has announced a list of problematic candidateswho are running for legislative office in the city. The coalition hopes thatthe list can provide useful information for voters in the upcoming elections.

'€œWe want to provide balanced and credible information to the people,'€ Beni Susanto from the Yogyakarta Critical Voters Coalition said on Thursday.

The list included, among others, former Bantul regent Idham Samawi, legislative hopeful from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) who has been named a suspect in a graft case.

Along with Idham is Roy Suryo Notodiprojo, legislative hopeful from the Democratic Party, against whom there have been unsubstantiated allegations that he used state facilities during his campaign. Roy, the current Youth and Sports minister, is also suspected of having started his campaign long before the schedule.

The list also included legislative hopeful Bambang Eko Prabowo, who is currently running for the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) and has been sentenced to a year in prison for graft by the Yogyakarta Graft Court.

Another name recorded on the list is People'€™s Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker Sidharto Danusubroto, currently running for a DPD seat, who has been suspected of directing PDI-P grass roots to vote for him at the upcoming elections during unauthorized campaign events.

The list was still ongoing with names of candidates running for the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) who are suspected of having violated multiple regulations.

The coalition, which is made up from dozens of local NGOs, claimed that it had got most of its information from the public domain such as from media reports and reports made by individuals or group.

Beni expected voters would want to use the list as consideration before they cast their vote.

Another coalition activist Sunaryo Hadi Prabowo encouraged voters to remain skeptical about legislative candidates.(dic)
