Golkar Party chairman and presidential hopeful Aburizal Bakrie has ended the chances of a coalition with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) by saying that both parties would nominate their own presidential candidates.

He said on Saturday that although he and Jakarta Governor Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo agreed to remain peaceful during the presidential race, they would not be running mates for the July 9 election.

'€œJokowi and I agreed to create a peaceful election in the upcoming presidential election but what is certain is that Golkar and the PDI-P will nominate their own presidential candidates,'€ Aburizal said in a press conference following a meeting with Jokowi, as quoted by Kompas.com.

The meeting was also attended by Golkar secretary-general Idrus Marham, PDI-P secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo, Golkar'€™s election division head Cicip Sutardjo and a number of Golkar executives.

He said that both parties agreed to support the elected president and would cooperate at the House of Representatives for a better Indonesia.

'€œWhoever the president will be, we will be friends. We agreed on it in the meeting between the PDI-P and Golkar,'€ he said.

Based on quick count results following the legislative election, the Golkar Party gained between 14.3 percent and 15 percent of the total vote, the second highest after the PDI-P, which topped the tally with between 18.9 percent and 19.2 percent of votes.

A party -- or a coalition of parties -- needs to secure at least 25 percent of the popular vote or 20 percent of seats in the House of Representatives to be eligible to nominate a presidential candidate. (idb/nvn)
