ozens of smuggled dogs were euthanized by officers from the Bali Agricultural Quarantine office in Gilimanuk, Jembrana regency, on Tuesday.

Bali Agricultural Quarantine spokesperson Ida Bagus Eka Ludra said 31 dogs of various breeds '€” including a Siberian husky, Pomeranian, miniature Pomeranian and a Lacy '€” were part of a smuggling attempt and were found on a bus traveling from Java to Bali that was apprehended on Friday.

'€œWe had to put the dogs to sleep because no one came to claim them,'€ Ludra said, as quoted by Antara news agency on Tuesday.

He said his office had tried everything to contact the people whose names were listed on the dogs'€™ documents, but to no avail.

'€œWe don'€™t want to take the risk of a rabies plague ['€¦] We have followed procedures,'€ he said.

Unlike the unclaimed dogs, he went on, two Persian cats and dozens of birds from the same smuggling attempt were returned to their rightful owners. (put)
