A number of communities in Greater Jakarta carried out activities in commemoration of Earth Day ' celebrated internationally on April 22 ' on Tuesday.
In Bogor, West Java, leaders from three religious organizations took part in a tree planting event held by the Lions Club District 307 at Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI).
The leaders were Bogor bishop Paskalis Bruno Syukur from the Catholic Church, Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Cisarua branch head Rahmatullah and Christian priest Paulus Wijaya from the Bethel Church of Indonesia (GBI), who was accompanied by several priests from his church.
Paskalis praised the event, which was also attended by schoolchildren.
'Here we meet. Our presence shows our concern for the environment. We hope that one day, we can see Catholics, Muslims and Christians gather again just like in this moment to plant trees,' he said.
He also talked about Saint Francis, who was referred to as an ecology protector in Catholic Church. The saint taught Catholics that all plants, animals and humans were brothers and sisters because they were gifts from God.
He said the three planting event was a display of affection for mother earth.
'We need to appreciate this earth not only through words, but also through real action,' he said.
Meanwhile, Roy Yusuf, a member of the children's services committee of Lions Club District 307, said his club had donated around 6,000 trees to TSI Bogor in commemoration of Earth Day. He said his club had been partnering with the park's greening projects.
