RI teams up with Netherlands to develop fisheries sector

M

aritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sharif C. Sutardjo says that the government is going to collaborate with the Netherlands to better promote Indonesian fisheries products and reduce harmful fishing practices.

"The program, which is called 'Project for Fisheries and Aquaculture for Food Security in Indonesia' will run for three years, from 2014 to 2016," Sharif said in Jakarta on Wednesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

The 4.5 million euro (US$6.21 million) program would be managed by the Center for Development and Innovation (CDI) of Wageningen University, he said.

The program is expected to help increase the supply of fish, access to fish products, improve the quality and standard of handling fish in local ports and reduce harmful fishing practices.

He said that Asia contributed 67 percent of the world's total fish production throughout 2011.

"Maritime and fisheries sectors across Asia have seen a decline because of critical fish-habitat degradation, loss of biodiversity, pollution, harmful fishing practices and climate change," he added. (nfo)
