The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has won the highest number of votes in the legislative election for Jakarta Legislative Council, securing more than 1.2 million votes, followed by the Gerindra Party with nearly 600,000 votes.

According to data released by the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD), having completed the recapitulation of the 4.5 million or so valid votes over the weekend, Gerindra garnered 592,472 votes, followed by the United Development Party (PPP) with 452,224.

The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) came fourth with 424,400 votes, the Golkar Party followed with 372,221 and the Democratic Party won 360,929.

In 2009, the Democratic Party won the election with over 1.3 million votes, while in 2004, the PKS won with 941,684 votes.

Charta Politika political analyst Yunarto Wijaya said this new local political mapping did not pose a threat to Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama. '€œWhen Jokowi [Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo] leaves his post [to contend the presidential election], Ahok should be the one to assume the governorship, despite what other commentators may say, as he is the only one legally allowed to do so,'€ Yunarto said on Sunday.

Former Jakarta governor Sutiyoso'€™s party, the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI), came bottom with only 42,217 votes. The second- and third-lowest ranked parties were the Crescent Star Party (PBB) with 60,759 votes and the National Awakening Party (PAN) with 172,784 votes.

KPUD chairman Sumarno said the PDI-P would certainly obtain the majority of seats in the city council for the 2014-2019 period, while the PKPI and PBB were unlikely to secure any.

He said the commission and the political parties would calculate how many seats a party had obtained, in accordance with the votes it won, at the Jakarta Legislative Council on May 11.

He added that the political parties would also determine which candidates would be awarded seats. '€œIt is usually based on the number of the votes each candidate wins,'€ he said.

Around 7 million Jakarta residents were eligible to cast their ballots to determine the 106 new members of the council, up from the last period'€™s 92 members.

However, only 64.8 percent of voters or around 4.5 million votes were valid. In 2009, valid votes totaled 3.78 million.

Sumarno said that besides reports of election fraud, one of the KPUD'€™s evaluations had found that some election officials lacked the requisite professionalism. '€œSome of our employees are only elementary school graduates, so sometimes the reports get messed up,'€ he said.

Chairwoman of the Jakarta branch of the Elections Monitoring Agency (Bawaslu), Mimah Susanti, said most of the irregularities reported by political parties related to vote calculations.

'€œThey usually concern the difference between the number of votes written on the form received by political party witnesses and those recapitulated at the subdistrict or district level,'€ she said.

Mimah added that most of the discrepancies were resolved immediately on the ground. '€œMost of the 80 alleged violations reported during the election and vote counts were solved straight away.'€

She said, however, that some political parties had reported violations alleging criminal activity. '€œFor these kinds of cases, we will investigate further,'€ she said.
