he Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has reported that it has found seven people suspected to have been infected by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus since the beginning of the year.
The airport health office had been regularly examining people who had just come back from umrah (minor haj) since January through to May, as reported by tempo.co.
"We have found seven people suspected to be infected since the beginning of 2014," head of the quarantine department at the airport, Sri Purwati, said on Thursday.
The airport had received information about MERS from several Middle Eastern countries and the Health Ministry since the beginning of last year.
"If a passenger from the Middle East is experiencing a cough, flu symptoms or has a fever above 38 degrees Celsius, we declare them as suspected carriers," she said.
Sri added that those suspected of being infected are then referred to the Sulianto Saroso Hospital for Infectious Diseases to be treated and monitored for several days. So far, the patients have tested negative.
Soekarno-Hatta airport has also installed a thermo scan in Terminal 2 D and 2 E in order to monitor passengers arriving from Saudi Arabia in the future. The thermo scan will immediately alert staff if a passenger has a fever above 38 degrees Celsius, according to tribunnews.com. (fss/dic)
