Aburizal says he and Megawati have reached an agreement

G

olkar Party chairman Aburizal Bakrie says an agreement has been reached between his party and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). He made the statement after a meeting with PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri on Jl. Teuku Umar, Jakarta, on Thursday.

'€œIn principle, there is a similarity of views,'€ he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

However, Aburizal said he had not yet made a decision on the formation of a coalition between Golkar and the PDI-P because such a decision should be made at a national leaders'€™ meeting (Rapimnas).

The next Golkar Rapimnas is set to take place on May 18, and Aburizal said he would request a permit for joining a coalition from party leaders during the meeting.

'€œI will ask for their approval [regarding the coalition]. If there are any developments on the matter, we will report it [to the PDI-P] before May 18,'€ he said.

Meanwhile, PDI-P central executive board chairman Puan Maharani said the discussions between Aburizal and Megawati were focused on the development of the nation in the future.

'€œThere have been serious discussion between Pak Ical [Aburizal] and Bu Mega, in which they reached agreed that there are similarities between the vision and mission of the two parties,'€ she said.

However, Puan added she was fully aware that Aburizal, as Golkar Party chairman, adhered closely to rules and would first have to discuss the possibility of the coalition at the Golkar Rapimnas on May 18.

'€œWe, the PDI-P, warmly welcome it [the potential coalition] based on our spirit of protecting political and communication ethics. Hopefully, there will be a meeting between the PDI-P and Golkar [to agree to a coalition],'€ said Puan. (fss/ebf)
