Intel strengthens portfolio in Indonesia'€™s mobile market

Sales of personal computers worldwide have continued to shrink in recent years as people now prefer to buy mobile computing devices.

And as one of the world'€™s largest chip makers, Intel Corporation has been trying to deal with the situation by entering the competitive mobile market.

Intel Indonesia'€™s channel sales director Harry K. Nugraha said that according to an internal study, the demand for tablet computers across Asia Pacific and Japan was predicted to be up 32 percent year-on-year in 2014.

'€œAnd Intel predicts that demand in Indonesia alone will account for 13 percent of total demand in Asia Pacific, excluding China,'€ he said.

He added that there were 74 million potential customers in Indonesia, 45 million of whom were in the consuming class.

'€œAnd that'€™s a considerable opportunity for us to come in,'€ Harry said.

In order to reach the target, he said the company released the next generation of Atom chips, codenamed Bay Trail, to give a massive boost to tablets.

The latest Atom processor is a multi-core system-on-chip (SoC) that integrates Intel'€™s processor core, graphic, memory and input/output interfaces into one.

The 64-bit processor is equipped with quad core that makes the device run faster and more responsive by allowing multiple applications and services to run at the same time.

'€œBay Trail can run in multiple OSs [operating systems], like Windows and Android,'€ Harry said.

He said that the chip also offered efficient power management where the battery could sustain more than 10 hours of active usage.

Moreover, the components on the SoC have also undergone some improvements that can support high-resolution display and retina display as well as producing sharp images and graphics. In addition, they are also ideal to complete photo-editing, video-rendering and animation tasks.

'€œThe tablet'€™s capability is almost as good as a PC, and they are now more powerful than the previous processors,'€ Intel'€™s manager for channel platform David Tjahjadi said.

Nevertheless, he said that in the mean time, Bay Trail in Indonesia was only available for tablets that run in Windows 8.1.

He added that Bay Trail was predicted to be available for Android tablets in the near future.

'€œMost Android tablets and its applications are still designed for 32-bit processor. But I guess they will slowly move toward the 64-bit in the next one or two years,'€ he said.

Currently, Intel-powered Android tablets that are sold in Indonesia are still equipped with the 32-bit processor. They are available through brands such as Asus, Lenovo and Dell.

Harry said Intel planned to increase their partners in the coming years, including teaming up with a local company whose name he did not reveal.

Apart from Bay Trail, Intel Atom has also launched another 64-bit processor, codenamed Merrifield, which offers longer battery life, stellar graphics and a system that is more aware with advanced sensors

'€œMerrifield is also designed to be compatible with 4G LTE [Long-Term Evolution] technology,'€ Harry said, adding that unfortunately, the chip would not be available anytime soon in Indonesia.

Tablets have actually been around since the late 1990s, but they just started to become very popular since the launch of Apple'€™s iPad in 2010.

They have now become the modern-day computing device, greatly transforming the function of a traditional PC and becoming an important part of today'€™s lifestyle.

According to research from IDC Worldwide Tablet Tracker, tablets have also evolved in line with users'€™ preferences.

It shows that 9-inch tablets were the most popular tablets sold in Asia Pacific in 2010 and 2011. In 2012, most customers bought 7-inch tablets and the trend continued into 2013.
