ndonesian Military (TNI) Chief Gen. Moeldoko said he hadrequested the government to issue a regulation- in- lieu- of-law (Perppu) inorder to guarantee TNI neutrality during the upcoming presidential election on July9.

"The existing law only regulates military neutrality during the legislative elections, not the presidential election. Therefore we should push the government to issue a regulation right away, '€œhe said on Friday.

Moeldoko said he had already sent a letter to the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto about the urgency for such a regulation.

However, Moeldoko also acknowledged that the law would not restrict retired military personnel since they had the right to vote as soon as their military service was over.

Separately, Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi said he would soon be speaking to the House of Representatives to discuss the creation of such a Perppu due to the many loopholes in Law No. 42/2008 on the presidential election, Antara news reported.

Gamawan said further talks with Djoko and Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro were also needed to deliberate this particular matter. (fss/dic)
